Magicians - a 2007 British comedy movie, starring the comic duo Robert Webb and David Mitchell - the stage magicians Karl and Harry. These two are competing together in a magic contest, despite the personal differences. This film is directed by Andrew O’Connor; written by Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain (the Channel 4 sitcom Peep Show’s writers, starring Mitchell and Webb). Other main cast members are: Jessica Hynes, Steve Edge, Darren Boyd, Peter Capaldi and Andrea Riseborough.
Karl Allen (Webb) and Harry Kane (Mitchell) are best friends, working together in a popular and successful magic double act, having Harry’s wife Carol (Sarah Hadland) as their assistant. But, after one show, Harry discovers Carol and Karl backstage having sex in a magic box. During the next show, Carol’s locked in a guillotine as part of some climatic trick, just for the blade to cut her head down; it’s not that clear whether Harry murdered her or whether she really was the victim of some freak accident. Four years later, this act has broken up and these two friends – now rivals – have separate lives; Harry’s working at Wilkinson hardware store, only to be fired right after a client complains when he makes the illusion of cutting his own arm severely with the knife blade at a sales pitch, whilst Karl’s reinventing himself as a David Blaine-esque magician nicked the Mindmonger, but with limited success. During some unsuccessful impromptu-pitch at a tv corporation, the only human being he manages to really impress is Dani (Riseborough), the tea lady, the one who Karl immediately gets a big crush. From here, some interesting developments await you… Romantic adventures, magical… mixed with intrigues, hate and passion.
